Parting

- Hassan Ismail Mayet

Dr. G. I. Motala Sahab was such a personality who was an achiever of respect and everyone felt pleasure to meet him, talk to him, having an audience with him, discuss with him and was always available for social cause. It is said, ‘Memories are treasures no one can steal and separation is a wound that no one can heal.” There are many instances which come out from our mind regarding Dr. Motala Sahab.

Here is a personality who was admired universally. He became a Consulting Dermatologist when there were hardly any educated people, in his generation. He was mentally prepared against all odds to achieve his goal for being not just a general practitioner but went on to become a specialist consulting skin specialist, rare in those days. He achieved high education and didn’t just stop there; he wanted to eradicate illiteracy in the society. He was always emphasizing that our Suratee Vohra community lags behind in proper education and was always for high education. He was worried that most of the students, today, are dropping out after primary or secondary educations and don’t go for higher education which is the need of the day and for future generation.

If I try to recount all his achievements, I am sure, I shall be making many mistakes in forgetting the most and doing injustice to them. Hence I won’t be doing that. I would rather like to emphasize on all the things he tried to do to eradicate all the ills in the society.

Once he joined, The Suratee Sunni Vohra Muslim Education Society (SSVMES), he never looked back. He was one of the active member, he was a true listener, he was down-to-earth, very friendly, kind, sympathetic, and had some definite goals and aims to achieve. His donation drive in the Holy Month of Ramzan was amazing. For a person who is one of the busiest and most sought-after Medical Specialist Consultant, who leaves behind his professional commitments and concentrates only on people’s welfare. He was always free for welfare programmes, donation drives in India and abroad, visiting villages and having public contact is unbelievable but true. His work for Sarvajanik Medical Trust famously known for running and maintaining of Lokhat and Mulla Hospital and Nursing Institute and College of Physiotherapy and for Hospital in Kosamba was awesome. He was directly or indirectly in touch with many social work and institutions and trusts. He tried his best to solve problems and sufferings of the people and tried his best to solve them with any way which way he could.

He knew there was no substitute for hard work and also that the success of tomorrow was rooted in the hard work of today. It is said, “Clever people do not use clock (watch) and knowledge for beauty and glamour.” Here I can say, Dr. Motala never saw his clock and knowledge for glamour or beauty but he made the right use of the same. He knew that to use these things for the welfare works was more important than name and fame.

When I read July 2004, issue of Vohra Samachar, it didn’t surprise me that there were so many mails to SSVMES office and all of them expressing their shock and sympathy and condolences for this great man. Since more than three decades I knew him. I always found that he was selfless social worker with great dedication, his personal contacts with all the Vohra Villages was awesome, in him was a dynamic personality, down-to-earth attitude, a good listener, and a good human being and a dedicated. I never ever read as many sympathy mails and message regarding someone’s death in Vohra Samachar before. His last donation of a big plot of land to build a technical institute is commendable.

After all he was a good human being and die-hard social worker. His frequent advices and tips were of great use for our trust. He would always tell us, “Never to lose heart and try to do the best and leave it to the destiny and you will achieve the best.” His advices were very useful for Alipore Hospital and we are proud to have Dr. Motalas’ advices which will always be helpful in the years to come.

Today as we have no more of him, his words, deeds, wishes dreams and ambitions are no secret to us. We all must try to achieve the same in one way or other as and when need be. His legacy will always be with us.

May Allah forgive his misdeeds and shower Noor in his grave! May Allah grant him the highest stage in Jannatul Firdaus! May Allah show all of us the right path and guide all the workers of SSVMES and Sarvajanik Medical Trust and all other institutions where he was involved in, to carry the torch of Unity, Equality, Knowledge and Brotherhood. May Allah grant Sabre-Jameel to all in his family and near and dear ones.” -Ameen!

“All Partings in life is sad,

but where the heart’s deepest feelings are involved;

the severance of old ties,

and the necessity to say ‘Good-bye’,

is about as trying an ordeal,

as any that  a man can be called upon to go through.”

This parting is an inevitable parting and so there never comes a parting as sad as this. As meeting once was a pleasure, frequently meeting was a dream come true and departing was always a pain. May Allah Guide us all. Ameen!
