ASWT ALIPORE HOSPITAL HEALTH AWARENESS PROGRAMME

MEETING OF MEDICAL DEGREE STUDENT

A programme organised by Alipore Social Welfare Trust's EDUCATION RELIEF & SCHOLARSHIP FUND DEPARTMENT was held on Wednesday, 25th July 2009 at 10:00 Hrs at Late Haji Adam Hassan Mayet Conference Hall, Alipore Hospital Building, Alipore, which was presided by Mr. Hassan Ismail Mayet, President, Alipore Social Welfare Trust, with the Guest of Honour being Dr. N. I. Kanuga, Kosamba and Mr. Mohammed Asifbhai, NRI Abu Dhabi, and Haji Gulam Hussain Kagzi Sahab, Kosamba. The proceedings of the meeting / scholarship distribution ceremony is as under:

1.    Kiraat: The programme started with a “Kiraat”  from the verse of Holy Qur'aan, the words of Almighty God by Fazlekarim Ziyauddin Maheta, aspiring student for Medical Degree for Smolensk State Medical Academy, Smolensk, Russia.

 

2.    Welcoming Guests: Secretary of ASWT, Mr. Bashirbhai Karolia welcomed all the guests. He also introduced all the dignitaries sitting on the dias, namely – Chief Guests Dr. Nazir Kanuga, Br Mohammed Asifbhai and Haji Gulam Hussain Kagzi Sahab. Mr. Bashirbhai also introduced Dr. Roopam Kumar Gupta MD, MHA, who is ex- Professor of Surat Medical College and now working at Alipore Hospital as CMO-cum-Administrator. He also gave brief information of the motive for which Alipore Social Welfare Trust had introduced Education Relief and Scholarship fund and also thanked Almighty and also expressed his deep gratitude to all the donors and well-wishers of the trust. 

 

3.    All the dignitaries and guests are honoured and welcomed by a flower by Trustees and Doctors of Alipore Hospital thereafter.

 

4.   SPEECHES:

a)    Br. Qari Abdul Hai Gajaria: In his brief but INSPIRING speech explained the need for Higher Education in the community and the Status one can achieve through it. He himself informed that he would get scholarship from a village group that was Rs. 50 a year and at the end of the year he had to submit the result alongwith detailed explanation of the Expenditure incurred during the year with special mention of the USAGE of the Scholarship Amount to three different Committee Members. If he failed to submit, next year his Scholarship would be discontinued.  Likewise, to keep Transparency and Accountability one must maintain proper Expenditure Details. He also added that the Medical Academy in Smolensk is very kind enough to allow Prayer Halls and also allow students to wear Islamic Costumes during the Class. Mr. Gajaria also stressed that at the same time, ASWT, Parents and their Teachers expect successful Results in the year end.

b)    Dr. Roopam Kumar Gupta: said being in Academic Field of Medical Faculty he would like to stress on HARD WORK which he said that there was NO SUBSTITUTE. He also explained the students that they are very Lucky to have been SPONSORED by ASWT under THE RAINBOW FAMILY – SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME. He advised that all students should set a goal and try to achieve it. Merely becoming a Doctor or GP should never be ones goal but the target should be to become Specialist Consultant Doctor or Super-Specialist and one should try to achieve it with Better Results each year and Hard Work. He reminded the students that once they have opted for Medicine or Dental Faculty then they must be ready to assume that they are now permanently a student. There are always new methods of medications and research going on. He stressed on Graduation and Post Graduation in the medical faculty.

c)   Mr. Mohammed Asifbhai: said being a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) and based in Abu Dhabi, he did not feel that Medical Students in India had to suffer the humility of Reservations and hence acquiring admission in the Medical Colleges in India was like a mirage. He appreciated The Rainbow Family- Scholarship Programme, A Muslim Aid UK and Alipore Social Welfare Trust Joint-Venture Scholarship Project, by stating that by contributing huge sum for the poor student was like restart of Baitul-Maal in the Golden Era of Hazrat Umar (Rad.). He said the students were, as Dr. Gupta stated, very lucky to get Scholarships of huge amount from this trust.

d)  Bashirbhai Karolia: said as a trustee, he would like to remind the applicants that they have to Fill-up the Application Form properly to minimize the time-consumption in the processing department. He also warned that wrong information giving in the form will not be taken lightly and may result into cancellation of the application or the board may even revoke the Scholarship. He further said that the Scholarship Committee expect each student to perform well and that they should atleast devote 50% of their vacation when they return home to Alipore Hospital as they will be taken care of by Dr. Gupta who himself was a Professor in the Medical College and also they shall get the opportunity to work and study under various medical consultants like Medicine, General & Laparoscopic Surgeon, Endoscopic Surgeon, Orthopaedic Surgeons, Paediatrics, Gynaecologist, Urologist, Intensivist, Gastro-Enterologist, Ophthalmologists, Pathologist, Radiologist, Anaesthetist, Nephrologists and many more faculties of Medical Experts. This suggestion was well received by all.

e)    PARENTS : were asked to give their views:-

i)  Mr. Ziauddin Maheta: said he is very much indebted to Alipore Social Welfare Trust and its board members to induct his son for medical studies. He added that he had never ever dreamt of getting his son becoming a Doctor of Medicine. In his emotional speech he could not stop his eyes becoming wet.
ii) Mr. Mehboob Pathan: said he being a school teacher could not think he would have got his two sons gaining an admission in medical faculty. He said he shall never forget ASWT and its Office-Bearers who have been very co-operative and were keeping HAWK-EYE on the performances of Each Students which is rare to be seen; he further clarified that even most of the parents are unaware of their children performances. Here ASWT is taking care of their students which are very much appreciated by them as a parent. He also appreciated the induction of Ex-Professor of Surat Medical College in ASWT, Dr. Gupta, by saying that it is the vision of the trustees to know that how each student is faring in their medical studies. He said he and his family is indebted.

                     f) STUDENTS: were asked to give their views

i) Mr. Mohammed Asad Rangrej, Final Year Student, TSMA, Tver, Russia: said he comes from a very poor and below poverty level family. He stated that his father would earn in wages which was very low. He thanked Mast Mangera and all the Members of ASWT to have supported him by sponsoring for his education. He said he intends to work for ASWT in future.
ii) Mr. Mohammed Rizwan, IV Yr Medical Student, SSMA, Smolensk, Russia: said he is coming from a working class family and his wish to become a Doctor was fulfilled because of ASWT’s Scholarship Project. He pledged that he would serve for ASWT’s cause and shall also sponsor a child’s medical education when Almighty makes him capable to do so, Insha-Allah!
iii) Miss Aasiya Malek, IV Yr Medical Student, SSMA, Smolensk, Russia:  said with tears in her eyes, that it was impossible for my parents, who earn meagre income and that she come from very poor family and her wish for becoming a Doctor would have not been fulfilled if ASWT would not have identified her as a potential scholar. She said that all at ASWT had been very kind to have helped her medical expenditure when all doors seemed to have been closed; Allah (swt) have sent Alipore Social Welfare Trust for her aid.

iv) Miss Qureshi Nazninbanu Yunusbhai, First Yr Medical Student, SSMA, Smolensk, Russia:  : said in her Qureshi family she is the first female to ever gone further to Medical College Level. She said she was Identified by Dr. Kanuga who recommended her to Mr. Hassan Mayet, who not only convinced her parents but also promised a guaranteed help to her for her medical expenditure incurred. She said that her first year is completed and that she feels her success of getting 100% marks in all subject is dedicated to Alipore Social Welfare Trust’s The Rainbow Family- Scholarship Programme. In her emotional words she said she was out of words. She said she would serve ASWT’s cause. Insha-Allah!

 

5.   CHIEF GUEST, Dr. N I KANUGA: in his speech, advised students and parents that due to Difficulty in getting medical admissions in Gujarat State or any where in India . It is good that MCI has recognised Medicine Students studying in Medical Colleges in any foreign country which is registered by WHO. He said the students studying in Russia especially Smolensk has passed their MCI exams with very good results. He stressed the need for Allopathic in today’s medical treatment, Medical Degree Holders like BHMS, BAMS or BUMS are not allowed to diagnose and recommend Allopathic medicines. Hence Medicine Degree as an Allopathic Doctor will bring be very useful for these students.

Dr. Kanuga also stressed that the students studying abroad should always keep on trying and maintaining to becoming a Good are not only like Ambassadors of India but also of Our Community. He then praised the students at  Russia have not forgotten their faith and origin, which we all should appreciate and that they have been religiously very aware of the ethics.
Dr Kanuga praised the Board Members for their selfless services towards Higher Education Awareness.

 

6.    FELICITATION OF Miss ANISA INTEKHAB PATEL: Miss Anisa Patel, had come to Alipore Hospital as a Medical Elective Student from University of Leeds, informing this Mr. Hassan Ismail Mayet, Chairman, Alipore Social Welfare Trust, said he felt proud of his good friend, Br. Intekhab Patel and family to have taken a Bold yet Right Decision of educating his daughter Anisa for Medicine Faculty. Miss Anisa Patel was felicitated with a Certificate and a Bouquet of Flowers by Chief Guest Dr. N I Kanuga. Anisa Patel thanked all at ASWT for the support and co-operation she got. She made a special mention by appreciating assistance and guidances given by Dr. Gupta. She gave full credits to her parents moral support and encouragement she received. Mrs. Patel, mother of Anisa Patel thanked the trustees, Doctors and Staffs of Alipore Hospital for being very co-operative to her daughter. She praised the facilities at Alipore Hospital, its cleanliness and maintenance. She wished the Hospital Management will do major progress in serving the patients in future also.

 

7.    CHAIRMAN SPEECH: Mr. Hassanbhai Mayet thanked Dr. Nazirbhai Kanuga for accepting to Chair this Meet. He then said that the students achieving marks below 92% have to cough up a donation amount to the tune of up to Rs. 35 Lacs for reputed Medical Colleges which deprives under-privileged students from Medical Degree, the less expensive alternative is to send their ward to Russia, China, Mauritius, Belarus and other countries as they are unsuccessful for. For the first year compared to any medical college in India the amount spent is less and affordable. He hailed the decision of Hyderabad High Court which directed Medical Council of India to give acceptance to all the Medical Academies which are in the list approved by World Health Organisation. He said many students are diverting to foreign countries just because of heavy expenditure and depriving of Admissions because of Reservations given to Scheduled Caste and Tribes and Extra Reservations like OBC and private placements. He stressed that students returning home in their vacation must devote 50% of their vacation to serve Alipore Hospital, referring as per Bashirbhai’s suggestion, he said that Alipore Hospital has appointed Dr. Gupta with a view to guide these students who would also gain exposure with Other Consultant Specialists and Super Specialists which would be very beneficial to them for their future. He also stressed on Hard Work and Dedication to Learn.

 

8.    DISTRIBUTION OF SOUVENIRS: were given to all the students .

 

9.    VOTE OF THANKS: Mr. Hassanbhai Mayet, President of Alipore Social Welfare Trust thanked all the people for attending the programme. He also thanked all the donors especially all the members of Muslim Aid UK who had made this project of Education Relief and Scholarship a big success. He also thanked the visiting delegates for sacrificing their time and attending this function. He also assured the guests to do the needful for their suggestions. He also thanked for the donations of equipments.  He thanked Almighty and prayed for all the donors and doctors and staffs and colleagues for their support.

 

10. Duaa: The meeting ended with a “Duaa” from Mr. Qari Abdul Hai Gajaria.
